A large new norwegian aquaculture farm will recieve 13 corrosion free pumps

13 brand new – and large – hybrid pumps are being assembled and made ready for a major project in Northern Norway.

They are all of the type LMSALT 600. The pumps are to be part of a brand new fish farm that Cermaq Norway is building to farm salmon.

Since the pumps are to work in salt water, which is aggressive, they would quickly corrode if they were constructed as traditional steel pumps. Instead, the pump pipes are constructed of the corrosion-resistant HDPE material, while the shaft and propeller are made of the strong and acid-resistant duplex.

For smaller pumps, the T-bend can also be made of HDPE. However, the pumps here have a diameter of 600 millimeters and are therefore both large and heavy. Therefore, the T-bend is made of steel, which is surface-treated with a very strong composite that is resistant to salt water.

The first five pumps have just been shipped. The next five will be ready at the beginning of 2026. The last three will be designed slightly differently, so they will have a higher capacity. They will be ready in March 2026.

30 Years Among Pumps - Uffe has become a pump-expert

Industrial Technician Uffe Holtze Celebrates 30-Year Anniversary at Lykkegaard This September. After so many years, he’s not afraid to admit he knows a thing or two about pumps…

“You’d have to be pretty foolish to show up to a job for 30 years if you didn’t like it. Then you should find something else,” says Uffe Holtze, 52. He’s standing in the workshop at Lykkegaard Pumps in Ferritslev, having just finished preparing eight pumps for shipment to a fish farm in Poland. But how many pumps he’s handled over the years at Lykkegaard? He couldn’t possibly count.

On September 21st, Uffe celebrated his 30th anniversary as an industrial technician at Lykkegaard. That’s 30 years with the same manager, Karsten Lykkegaard, and 30 years of building pumps.

It might sound like 30 identical years, but that’s far from the truth, Uffe explains.

“I wouldn’t function if I had to stand at the same machine day in and day out. No two workdays are ever the same here. Some days I’m in the workshop working on one or more machines, sometimes I’m assembling pumps and preparing them for testing – and quite often I’m out visiting farmers, pump associations, or companies to pick up, repair, or install pumps,” he says.

Incredible skilled and liked technician

Uffe is usually the technician who visits customers – whether it’s a summerhouse area in Denmark, a large farm, or fish industry businesses across Denmark and the Nordics. And according to Karsten Lykkegaard, he couldn’t ask for a better ambassador for the company.

“Uffe is incredibly skilled and a genuinely kind person. I often get calls from customers who’ve had a visit from Uffe, and they take the initiative to tell me what a pleasant and positive experience it was. As a manager, you really can’t ask for more,” says Karsten Lykkegaard.

Uffe himself is also happy that part of his job involves being out in the field as a service technician and installer.

“It’s great to get out. One of the perks of pump stations around the country is that they’re often located in beautiful natural areas with views of the sea or fields. It’s nice to meet new people and get some fresh air. On the other hand, I’d probably get tired of it if I had to be out on installation jobs every single day. As I get older, I can feel that I’d rather sleep in my own bed than stay overnight somewhere – and I’d rather push dinner a bit and get home to a slice of rye bread or leftovers in my own kitchen than stop at a roadside cafeteria,” he shares.

Experience Makes Uffe an Expert

Installation jobs often involve fitting a large pump into a pump house that’s barely bigger than the pump itself. So it takes creativity and cleverness to get the pumps into the designated holes.

“Half the job comes with experience. I wouldn’t want to install one of the big pumps in a pump house without having done it before,” says Uffe Holtze, who learned a lot from the older colleagues he worked with early on. He absorbed their knowledge and experience.

Over the past 30 years, he’s also trained several apprentices and younger colleagues.

“There was a time when I was the one asking the older guys for advice when I was unsure. Now I’m the one they come to,” he says, and admits:

“Yes, I know quite a bit about pumps by now. And it means a lot to feel confident in what I do.”

The anniversary will be celebrated with a dinner for all employees and their partners.

When conditions change: Lykkegaard invents "hybrid-pump" to withstand aggressive water

You probably know the feeling. You've bought something to solve a specific challenge and it fits perfectly. But then conditions change, and what you were so happy with is no longer perfect.

This is what our partner Ydra in Norway experienced. For a fish farm, we previously delivered a 400 mm steel pump that was supposed to circulate and oxygenate the water in the farm. It worked fine – until the conditions changed. They went from using freshwater to saltwater. And the steel pump couldn't last as long. Especially if the saltwater has a certain concentration of salt and relatively high temperatures, turning it into so-called aggressive saltwater.

The facility is built to the dimensions of the steel pump, but normally our HDPE pumps have slightly different dimensions than steel pumps. But it's good that we have creative engineers.

They have created a so-called hybrid pump, where the T-joint remains in composite-treated cast iron and the pump pipe itself is made of the corrosion-resistant HDPE material.

In this way, it was possible to produce a pump with the same dimensions as the previous one, but which can now withstand working in aggressive saltwater.

We did a similar exercise a few years ago for a fish farm in Chile, which faced the same challenge.

So yes, we mean it when we say CUSTOMER-TAILORED.

Lykkegaard Begins Generational Transition, with the 5th Generation Set to Take Over the Family Business

29-year-old Jeppe Pommer Lykkegaard has acquired 49% of the shares in the pump company Lykkegaard A/S. This marks the beginning of the process for the 5th generation of the Lykkegaard family to eventually lead the Ferritslev-based company.

At the beginning of 2025, two 58-year-old twin pumps were brought in for repair at Lykkegaard A/S's workshop in Ferritslev, Funen. These pumps were produced and installed in Rørvig in 1967 by Hans and Knud Lykkegaard and their employees. Shortly after, Hans' son Bent took over the company.

This year, Bent's son, 66-year-old Karsten Lykkegaard, received the order, arranged for the pumps to be collected, and helped assess them. The solution was to reuse the pump parts that were still functional, which amounted to almost one pump, and then build a completely new one to the same specifications.

When the pumps return to the factory for service and repair in the future, it will most likely be Karsten's son, Bent's grandson, and Hans' great-grandson, Jeppe Pommer Lykkegaard, who will be leading the company.

The generational transition process has just begun, with Jeppe Lykkegaard ready to become the 5th generation in the Lykkegaard company. In 2025, he acquired 49% of the shares and a seat on the company's board.

"I chose to take over myself. It was a natural step, but my parents were clear that it was my choice and had to be a deliberate decision. I grew up at the factory and enjoy developing products and finding new and better solutions. So, it is a natural step for me to eventually take over the entire factory," says Jeppe Lykkegaard.

The plan is for him to eventually take over both the remaining shares and the CEO position from his father. However, no date has been set for this yet, says the current CEO, Karsten Lykkegaard.

"We want a long and smooth generational transition, where we work together until I am ready to retire and Jeppe is ready to take the CEO position. We can easily spend several years on this," says Karsten Lykkegaard, who still enjoys coming to work every day but is also looking forward to stepping back a bit:

"Jeppe is really talented and has already developed the company in ways I cannot. I know a lot about pumps, but I don't understand the new technologies. As long as he enjoys developing and exploring new workflows, it's fine that I handle all the phone calls and contact with our old customers," says Karsten Lykkegaard.

Developing More Energy-Efficient Pumps

Jeppe Lykkegaard is trained as an industrial technician and later as a mechanical engineer and has worked at the company for the past few years. Among other things, he has overseen a restructuring of propeller production, so they are no longer cast in either Sweden or Denmark but instead designed and milled in one piece on an advanced machine, a so-called five-axis machining centre at the factory.

The new propellers have several advantages. First and foremost, they are more precise and can be optimised in detail for the exact amount of water they need to move. This means they use less electricity to move the same amount of water and are therefore energy-saving.

Tests at Lykkegaard's test centre show that a pump typically saves 5-7% electricity to move the same amount of water using the new propellers compared to the cast ones.

Additionally, it also saves CO2 in production, as the materials are no longer transported over long distances. Last but not least, the employees at the factory no longer have to polish the propellers, which produced metal dust that was not optimal for the working environment.

Quality and Sustainability in the DNA

Jeppe Lykkegaard grew up at the factory and is completely aligned with his father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather in that what is produced at the factory must be of high quality and last for many years.

"We often receive pumps for repair that are 60 years old. The new pumps we produce are produced with the aim at also lasting that long. Lykkegaard has never been a throwaway product, and we should not become one. I would much rather produce quality pumps that are cheap to operate and last a long time than produce some that are cheaper to acquire but easily break," says Jeppe Lykkegaard.

The family business Lykkegaard A/S was founded in 1883 by Niels Hansen in Ferritslev on Funen. He grew up in agriculture and was skilled in mechanics. He wanted to ease the farmers' hard work and therefore invented, among other things, a throwing machine and a sowing machine.

With the same motivation, he began building wind motors and mills. His sons Hans and Knud Lykkegaard followed in his footsteps when they took over the factory from him in 1932. They expanded to also produce windmill-driven drainage pumps.

Today, the pumps are electric motor-driven and are the company's primary focus, and pumps are delivered worldwide, both for drainage, which was the original task, and in recent years, the industry and especially the global fishing industry have become some of the factory's major customers.

100 Years of Profit

The company has always had a profit in its accounts – and as part of its written values, it only grows with its own funds. Therefore, there are no gazelles on the shelves – but several other awards such as the Apprenticeship of the Year at Dansk Metal, Company of the Year at Faaborg-Midtfyn Business Council, and other recognitions that have come over the years.

And there are no plans for groundbreaking changes here either:

"We want to grow, but it must be so that we can keep up and maintain the same high quality. The biggest challenge in recent years has actually been attracting qualified labour, so we have outsourced some of our tasks to meet our goals," says Jeppe Lykkegaard.

Jeppe has been involved in the company all his life. He apprenticed as an industrial technician at a neighbouring company to gain different skills and not have his father as his master.

However, he was affiliated with the company during his engineering education, where he interned and worked on optimising and processing propellers.

Today, all propellers are designed and processed according to Jeppe's concept.

Extra pumps as safety for the fish and insurance for the company

Several fish farms have ordered extra pumps so that they have both when they need to do service and in case of an accident

Three pumps have been sent out into the world in recent weeks. Two to a large fish farm in New Zealand and one to Norway. The pumps have one thing in common: they are a kind of "insurance pumps". Understood in the sense that they are extra pumps that the fish farms need to be able to use when the existing pumps need to be serviced - and if the unfortunate event occurs and there is a breakdown.

An extra pump provides safety for the fish.

Norske Ænes Inkubator AS is very, very dependent on their pumps working all the time. Because the fish in their farm will die after just a short downtime. This applies not only to them, but to the vast majority of our customers in the fishing industry.

The company opened in 2022 - and was completely finished in February 2023. At that time, we delivered eight pumps for their ponds. Now, to be on the safe side, they have ordered an extra pump exactly like the other eight. And a delegation from the factory has just visited Lykkegaard on Funen to be trained in how they can maintain and carry out minor repairs on the pumps themselves.

So if there is an accident and one pump fails, they can quickly switch to their backup pump and have the other repaired without compromising the well-being of the fish.

It's a bit like driving around with a spare tire in the car.

Fish insurance for New Zealand

Three years ago, we delivered eight new HDPE pumps to a new RAS fishing facility in New Zealand. As with the Norwegian facility, it is absolutely crucial that the pumps run constantly.

Now it is time for the first service inspections of the pumps. In this connection, the company has ordered two pumps identical to the first eight. Then they can take their time and remove two pumps and insert the extra pumps, while the technicians carry out service and minor repairs.

The extra pumps also act as insurance if there is an accident and a pump suddenly fails. Then you can quickly insert a spare pump and save the fish and the facility.

The pumps are of the LM Salt PR 400/500PE type and have a propeller diameter of 400 mm.

They are essentially identical to the eight we sent over three years ago. However, the propellers on the new pumps have been updated. In the meantime, we have switched from having the propellers cast in Sweden to milling them on our advanced CNC machine here at the factory. This shortens production time, avoids CO2 emissions from transporting the mold and the cast propeller, and in addition, the finished propeller no longer has to be polished, which previously released metal dust.

Lykkegaard has published its first ESG report

We are proud to publish the company's first ESG Report. It is the report of 2023. More are to come.

Actually, only large companies are required by law to prepare and publish their ESG report. Lykkegaard has neither a turnover nor a number of employees that are close to EU requirements.

Nevertheless, we have had our first version of the company's ESG report approved in connection with the 2024 general meeting.

We have made it for several reasons:

First, many of our customers are large companies that must publlish their official ESG accounts. They need to have control over their entire value chain. This means that they already demand data from us on the various parameters in the offer phase. We therefore know a lot of data in order to be able to participate in the tender rounds and be able to document our choices and actions.

Second, it sharpens our own focus on core values and how we want to be in the world. Lykkegaard is a family-owned company with 140 years of history. We have many strong values within, for example, quality and orderliness, local roots and recyclability, and we have meticulously sorted our waste and residual products for decades.

When we have to go through the process of documenting what we do and why, it sharpens our focus and helps us make more choices. As an example: For long we have bought refurbished electronics when we had the chance. Now we have officially decided that we do this as standard if what we need is available in a refurbished version. We have also become more aware of the challenge of using heating oil when we see how much it takes up on our CO2 accounts.

So we become more focused and wiser about our own company from working with ESG reporting.

Is this a perfect and complete ESG report that is ready? No, it is not. We are using version 1.,s to learn from. Next year we will have become wiser and more experienced in collecting data and communicating it.

For the setup and communication, we are inspired by the templates that the Danish Business Authority has prepared for SMEs (and we have mixed a little of their template from 2023 and the one from 2024).

In addition, we have gone through a course in the Confederation of Danish Industry "Climate-Friendly Production Company", where we have been guided through our first CO2 accounting.

A new pump build from reused parts from 57-year old pumps

Two worn-out twin pumps from Rørvig have been assembled into one functional pump and then we are building a new one.

The homeowners' association at the Langesøvænget summer house area in Rørvig has had two identical Lykkegaard pumps since 1967 to ensure that the houses are not flooded during wet periods.

The pumps have been serviced and repaired a handful of times over the past 57 years. But now they were getting so worn out that the pump guild expected them to need replacing.

Casting steel requires a lot of energy and is a demanding CO2 process. We have always known that, but when we work with CO2 accounts and ESG it just becomes more clear. That is why we are also extra happy that we managed to assemble one pump from recycled pump parts from the two old pumps. This way we skip the large CO2 emissions that would otherwise have occurred when the steel had to be melted down.

So now they get one brand new and one that is largely created from the old pump parts.

“It takes a little extra research to find out how much of the existing pumps can be recycled. And then of course there is a lot of work to restore the pump parts and paint them so that they become strong again and can last for many more years. It takes at least as much craftsmanship to restore and recreate the pump, rather than “just” building a new one”. But it is satisfying to be able to deliver a “new” recycled pump from the almost 60-year-old pump parts,” says Karsten Lykkegaard, owner of Lykkegaard A/S.

The largest milled propeller to date

The propeller is intended for a new drainage pump at Kolindsund.

2000 liters per second. 850 mm in diameter. Approximately 70 kg.
These are some of the specifications of the propeller that has just been completed at our five-axis machining center.
It will be used in one of the pumps we are building for Kolindsund in Djursland.

The propeller will help pump water away from the fields in the area, which would be Denmark's largest lake if it were not drained.
Since the area lies below sea level, water must always be pumped away—but during periods of heavy rainfall, the pressure on the pumps is intense. This is also why we are dealing with a size where a single pump will move over 2000 liters per second.

The propeller is approximately 850 mm in diameter and has been milled in five pieces. The four propeller blades were milled separately, as was the hub. They were then assembled into a single propeller. Milling the propeller in multiple pieces optimizes both handling and material usage.

The propeller is made of aluminum and still weighs around 70 kilograms when fully assembled. So, it's not something you can just lift with your bare hands.

The pump will be installed in Kolindsund, where in recent years, there have been increasing challenges in pumping away large volumes of water. Especially in the autumn and winter months of last year, large parts of the fields in the area were flooded.

New machine improves the working environment and makes work more efficient

Lykkegaard has just had a new Okuma CNC lathe with milling function installed at the factory.

Among other things, it will be used to turn items such as pump housings, axle equipment and pump hubs, which will be used for the propeller pumps that are produced at the factory in Ferritslev.
Some of the advantages are, that it can make work more efficient, increase accuracy and improve the working environment.

Behind the closed doors, the workpieces move around, while the machine's tools work quietly and precisely. With the help of computer programming, the machine knows exactly how to process the workpiece, which tools to use and very precisely what dimensions the workpiece should have when it is finished.

Industrial technician Nicolai Burmeister sets up the programs and keeps an eye on the machine.

The new machine, Okuma LB3000, can effectively turn pump blanks – and is particularly effective when several similar blanks are to be processed. And then it improves the working environment.

Until now, employees have had to turn, drill and ream manually, which cannot avoid releasing metal dust particles into the air. Particles which are now kept inside the machine and which will therefore not disturb the employees' airways or require different cleaning than that which is in the machine.

Investment and labor shortage

The machine can also improve efficiency and lower production costs in a time of labor shortages.

“It will do some work that would otherwise have been done by apprentices or journeymen in the factory. It would have been bad style to replace people with machines if we had had a surplus of labour. But in a time when it is difficult to fill industrial technician positions, and there are not enough applicants for the training, it is also a way to make the factory work with the hands we have," says director Karsten Lykkegaard.

Lykkegaard Pumper exclusively produces customized propeller pumps and therefore does not have mass production of exactly the same items. Therefore, they have been a little unsure whether a CNC lathe was an obvious choice. Eight years ago, they bought an older and used model to test it on work methods and workflows. It has worked fine - but partly the programming is out of date, and partly it was located far from the company's large five-axis CNC milling machine, so when Nicolai Burmeister has to teach apprentices how to program, they are physically far apart. In addition, the new machine can be more precise and accurate in its processing than the old one.

The new machine is therefore located right next to the CNC milling machine, so that apprentice and journeyman are close to each other, and so that one person can often operate both machines.

99% of Lykkegaard's pumps can be reused or recycled

Did you know that 99% of a pump from Lykkegaard A/S can be reused or recycled? And that we offer to disassemble old pumps and sort the parts so that they can be reused as best as possible? This is how we have always done it - but now it has become modern to relate to reuse and recycling.

In 2022, we bought 38.5 tonnes of steel – and sent 36.5 tonnes for recycling. This is not because we have such a large amount of waste in our production - but rather that 2022 was a year in which we repaired and restored many old pumps and in that context helped the customers with the parts that could no longer be used in the pumps. Some of the new pumps we produced were in HDPE material and others were built from pump parts from stock. So it is not every year that we end up purchasing and recycling almost the same amount of steel.

But the numbers are now interesting anyway.

At Lykkegaard, we have gone through a course in Dansk Industri's project Climate-ready Production Company. We have done this because we receive training in preparing
our CO2 accounts and become aware of how we use resources and which ones we use. It is necessary because several customers demand it in connection with large projects. It also gives us a more detailed knowledge of our own emissions.

Optimizing resource consumption and recycling has always been high in Lykkegaard's value chain – climate accounting or not. For generations, we have produced pumps with the goalog using the least possible power to move exactly the amount of water that the customer demands.

In this content, we have also sorted our waste into as many fractions as we could think of, so that we can recycle it the best possible. Some pump parts we can reuse directly ourselves, as when we quickly repaired an older drain pump with a pipe part that we had saved from a previous pump. However, it is not often that we are so lucky.

We often take the pumps apart into as small parts as possible and send it for recycling - divided according to the type of metal it is. There is an economic advantage in this, because we simply get more money for the metals we send for recycling if they are as clean as possible. But it also has a great environmental advantage, because it can be recycled exactly as it is – steel, duplex, aluminum or brass.

Lykkegaard's pumps are produced so that they can be taken apart and reused as much as possible. In fact, it is only a rubber bearing that sits as a shaft bearing inside the pump, which cannot be reused directly from pumps that usually weigh several tons.

"It makes good sense for us to know what kind of materials we are working with. And a clear conscience that we know that it can all be separated and reused again. It could

when my grandfather built pumps many decades ago - and we have no reason to change that. Now it has become so modern to be able to say that everything we make can be recycled. So now it's as if the old-fashioned has become modern," observes Karsten Lykkegaard.

1100 litres a second makes a fountaine

We have just tested a pump that will go to Kolindsund and pump water away from the fields in what would be Denmark's second largest lake if water was not pumped away. So a lot of pumping power is needed.

Here it is a 600 mm pump which can pump 1100 liters of water per second at a lifting height of 5 metres.

That's a lot of water! And it looks like a large firework show when we pump it straight up into the air at our test plant. Here we investigate energy consumption and the pump's capacity.

We have test tubes for many different sized pumps - but the basin itself could well have been a little bigger for these large 600 mm pumps. So now we wish for some rain soon, as quite a few of the 1,000,000 liters of water from the pool ended up in the yard during the test session ��

Old pump pipe gets new life in 52-year-old Lykkegaard pump

Quick repair was made possible by reusing a used pump part from an old pump

This winter a lot of water was all over the fields of Denmark. An extremely wet and relatively warm winter made many fields overflown by water. For this reason it was urgent for a farmer on Lolland to have his 52-year-old Lykkegaard pump repaired when it broke down earlier this year.

The pump has not been removed from the pump housing for 38 years. But it has so far run flawlessly - that is, right up until now.

The majority of the pump could easily be reused after repair. But one part of the tube was corroded and it needed a new propeller.

The propeller has been changed to a brand new one, milled here at the factory designed from the old drawings.

But we could replace the part of the pipe that needed to be changed both faster and cheaper for the farmer (and for the climate) by using a pipe part from one of the pumps that we have previously dismantled.

We save the parts that are intact and can be reused. And that was the farmer's luck. The pipe is red though, and the pumps we are sending out today are, as you probably know, black. But there was no time for us to paint it over – and when the water is gushing and has to be pumped away, it is not the color of the pump pipe that is decisive either.

So now the pipe has been given a new life in an aging pump on Lolland.

French pumps restored after 175.000 running hours

Two French pumps from fish farming have been restored after 20 years of uninterrupted pump work

Now they have been back to the workshop for the first time and got a new axle and new propellers. The rest of the pumps have been checked, inspected and examined - and put back on the pump.

So now the pumps are ready to be shipped back to France and pump water to the fish again.

A little curiosity: If a car managed to drive continuously for 175,000 hours and we just count on an average speed of 50 km/h, then it would have driven 8 billion km.

There are probably no cars that can do that anyway - not even Mercedes

New type of propellers will make Lykkegaard's pumps even more energy efficient

Lykkegaard has developed its own propellers, which are milled from one piece. The accuracy achieved when the propeller is designed and milled exactly according to pump measurements means that the pumps can utilize the energy even better than before

The first pumps with a new type of propeller have been sent out into the world.

The propeller type is designed, developed and produced here at the factory in Ferritslev, Denmark and is milled out in one piece from a solid block and into a very accurate propeller. The former propellers have been casted in a mold.

"We are constantly working to adjust and optimize our pumps. Throughout the company's history, we have had our propellers casted from molds designed by ourselves, but casted at a foundry .

With the latest technology and large CNC machines, it is now possible that we can mill the propellers here at the factory at the exact angles and dimensions to pump water in the most energy-efficient way. It requires a lot of development work, but is also really exciting, when we see the results," says owner Karsten Lykkegaard.

It is the 5th generation at the factory, Jeppe Lykkegaard, who is behind the engineering work in designing, drawing and developing the new propeller type.

Significantly more efficient

According to in-depth tests in our factory, the new type proves to be more energy efficient than the previous cast propellers.

This means that if a customer changes a the propeller of a pump from the former to the new type, they will either have a larger pumping capacity at the same energy consumption or the same capacity at a lower energy consumption.

And for pumps that run around the clock, this is can surely be seen on the operating account. Lykkegaard's pumps already have a reputation of being extremely energy efficient, but with the new techonology we can guarantee a lower energy consumption.

The strategy to do all phases of the propeller-making in-house, from design to manufacturing, also dramatically reduces the production time of new propellers. Previously we had to go through a long process of having a mold made at a subcontractor and then have it sent to the foundry. Get the propeller cast, have it sent back to be machined and only then test it. Now, the whole process is done in a one day. From design to end test.

Better for the working environment

Being able to mill the propellers in stead of having them casted into a form is also better for the working environment. The casting process contains physical hard work and it is difficult to avoid dust and gasses from the liquid metal coming into the air that the workers breathe.

That is a much more controlled process with the advanced CNC-machines. So it is a kind of win win - the propeller and the pump gets more exact and has a higher efficiency - AND the working environment is improved.

All pumps which pump from 10 - 200 l/sec are now produced with the new milled propellers.

The dry dock at Odense Port can again work at full capacity after a pump broke down

Lykkegaard has repaired and restored one pump for Odense Harbour's large dry dock. So now the dock can once again function at full power

One of the two dry docks at the Odense Port has lacked capacity for a period, when one of the three large pumps that pumps the water out of the dock broke. The shaft was broken and several pump parts were broken in that connection.

It is a huge pump, which weighs up to eight tonnes and can pump 2500 liters per second, and can therefore quickly empty the dock when a ship has sailed in to arrive at the shipyard.

At Lykkegaard, we were asked to repair and restore the pump so that it is ready to run again. And preferably as soon as possible, so that the dock does not have to stand for too long.

Design of special parts

The pump is so large and different from the pumps we normally work with, so special drawings were needed. Unfortunately, there were no finished drawings of the individual parts for the pump (It is not Lykkegaard, which produced it in its time. If it had been, we would have had the original drawings).

Therefore, we had to measure and design ourselves based on the damaged parts and produce new ones that fit the size. A demanding detail work for engineers and industrial technicians. Because on such a pump, everything must fit together down to 1/100 of a millimeter.

"It has taken time and been demanding. But it is also a challenging task that gives professional pride when it works," says Uffe Holtze, who is an industrial technician and has worked with pumps at Lykkegaard for 26 years.

He has had the professional responsibility in the workshop for the reconstruction of the pump. It is therefore also him who has turned the new shaft and all the newly designed pump parts.

Must be able to work in salt water

All pump parts have been taken apart in connection with the repair and it has been painted with a new layer of super strong composite, which can withstand working in salt water in the harbour. Steel will rust quickly, but with the glossy composite surface, the salt water cannot penetrate and therefore the pump can last much longer.

Now the pump has been picked up by a trucker and lifted onto the warehouse with Lykkegaard's largest crane and set in place in the dock at Lindø with the help of another giant crane. A few employees from Lykkegaard have been out to ensure that the pump is running as it should.

"It is an exciting and demanding task. But it also makes a lot of sense for us to repair and restore. Because even though we have spent a lot of working hours getting the pump to run smoothly again, it is still very time-saving compared to building a new pump - and far better for the environment that we recycle everything we can. The one we have delivered now is as good as new," says Karsten Lykkegaard, owner of Lykkegaard Pumper.

Five propellerpumps are ready for a French aquaculture setting

It looks fascinating when so much water suddenly flows from the pump!

This pump is one of five we've designed and produced for a French fish farm. It is tested, as every pump we produce, to assure it if functioning without any dissonance or leakage.

The idea is that it should be close to “plug and play” when the pump arrives at the destination in France.

This propeller pump can pump around 500 l/sec and will assure oxidation of the water at the aquaculture setting.

A Fish farm in Chile needed corrosion free pumps at specific meassurements because of aggressive water with high temperatures and high salt concentration. We have designed and build two special pumps for them

A fishing facility in Chile receives two custom made pumps produced to be able to function in aggressive water - which is water with high salt concentration and high temperatures.

The pumps had to be adapted to special measurements because they replace older steel pumps. They are therefore designed with pump pipes made of the synthetic material HDPE , which does not corrode or release any substances into the water – even when working in aggressive water.

The T-bend had to have a size and diameter that is not produced in HDPE (and which would therefore require extra long design and production time). So we chose to use a steel T-bend, which has been sealed with an extremely hard-wearing composite mixture that can also withstand salt and extreme temperatures.

In this way, the pumps are designed to work stably for many years, despite the difficult conditions.

The pumps are designed to pump 350 l/sec at a head of 4.1 mh2o and 30 kw/h.

They have been shipped from Denmark and are on their way across the Altantic to Chile.

Real life mathematics teach students how school knowledge can be used in reality

The 6th grade from Rolfsted Skole has moved a full day's teaching out at Lykkegaard Pumper. Here the students calculate geometics such as the area and volume of pumps, boxes and the entire warehouse - in addition to being shown around. This makes the teaching more real and gives the students an impression of what it is like to work at a company like Lykkegaard.

"It surprises me that it is so nice and clean here. I thought industrial technician was boring, but now it is a possible job for me one day.”

Rasmus Wissendorf Apitz is in the 6th grade at Rolfsted School. Together with the class, he has had a full school day at Lykkegaard Pumper in Ferritslev as part of the project the "Business Backpack" in Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality.

At Lykkegaard they have seen the factory, heard about how pumps are produced, met the two apprentices who are not currently at school - and then they themselves have been measuring and calculating the volume of a pump, the area and volume of the warehouse and calculated dimensions on boxes and examined how many can be on the warehouse shelves.

The whole aim of the day is for the students to experience how mathematics is used in reality and get an impression for the local workplaces. In this way, they both gain more knowledge about why they have to learn things at school and that what they can be used for. And in addition, it should also open the students' eyes to some of the educational paths they can also choose when they leave school.

Cool to measure the big things

Rasmus, Harun and Mikkel agree that it is a fun way to be at school.

"It is more exciting to do mathematics this way. You can touch things and walk around and measure. And it is bigger than what we can measure at school," says Mikkel Majbom Møller and Harun Spahic adds:

“This is real. These are real things we measure. It was cool to get out and measure things where we had to go around and do it and not just sit on a chair,” he says.

Challenged the prejudices about companies

The boys talk excitedly about the tour that owner Karsten Lykkegaard has given them at the factory. And how they found out that waste is sorted into over 40 different parts, so that as much as possible can be recycled

“I thought you would get dirty in a factory. But here it is very bright and clean. And you can see they are keen on keeping order. I didn't expect that, but it makes it nice to be here," Mikkel Majbom Møller says, who also recounts that part of the focus on cleaning is also due to the working environment, which becomes better and healthier for the employees when the environment is clean them.

Provides a different way of learning.

Teacher Jesper Hybel is enthusiastic about the collaboration with Lykkegaard in relation to the students' teaching. Because it both provides opportunities for the students who are best motivated by understanding exactly what their assignments will be used for - and because they learn about working life by visiting.

"It's healthy to get out. For some of the students, this makes much more sense than sitting and calculating tasks on a piece of paper. We won't have to do anything here at the factory that they haven't already learned. But translating what they have learned theoretically into solving problems here is something completely different and gives them a lot," he says. And adds:

"I am impressed by how much time Karsten Lykkegaard spends on us and our teaching on a day like this. It gives the students a great experience and a lot of knowledge about the labor market, the training for industrial technicians, which we cannot provide in the same way at school,"

You must give back to your local area

At Lykkegaard Pumper, Karsten Lykkegaard is the 4th generation in the family that owns the company. They designed and produced pumps for over 130 years and had apprentices for almost as many years.

Therefore, Karsten Lykkegaard also knows that creating knowledge about his profession and his company among young people is crucial if you also want to be able to recruit employees in the future. And that is one of the reasons why he has joined the "Business Bckpack" from the start.

"We have a big responsibility in showing the young people what it means to take a vocational training and learn to work with your hands. Not everyone is the best at sitting with their head in a book. Some are better at creating something with their hands - and they must experience that there are good, important and exciting courses and jobs for them. And we are companies that are ready to accept them, both as apprentices and as employees," Karsten Lykkegaard says.

He spends the whole day with the school pupils while they are at the factory. Both to help them and because he thinks it's fun.

“They are funny, the young people. They ask so many good questions about everything from how much the machines cost and what we earn, to how much water a pump can pump per second and how we sort waste. We also learn something from having visits from the school pupils.

Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality has developed the "Business Backpack" so that school pupils from 4th to 9th grade transfer part of their mathematics lessons to various local companies. The main porpose is to let the pupils experience what it is like to work with their hands. Faaborg-Midtfyn Kommune has one of the highest share of young people choosing vocational education in Denmark. And the number is increasing.

Drainage pump is changed after 71 years

Pump-association in Odsherred, Denmark changes their pump after 71 years

It has been draining an area in the northern part of Odsherred, Denmark for over 70 years, more precisely since 1951. But now the pump can't do it anymore, and it has gradually worn out so much that it no longer makes sense to repair it. That is why the association "Klintsø Dike- and Pumpelag" has got a brand new pump. The old drawings were intact, so Lykkegaard has produced a pump in exactly the same dimensions as the old one, so that it fits the installation and the pump house.

Karsten Lykkegaard's grandfather produced the pump i 1951 for the local landowners' pumping station. It has five pumps of different sizes, which ensure that rain and surface water can be directed away.

New pump is produced with the idea that it will last for another 70 years

The local Tengslemark Smedie is responsible for daily maintenance. Blacksmith Hans Højvang has looked after the pumps for the past many years.

So it was also him and a friend who dismantled the pump and delivered it to the Lykkegaard factory.

It was though no longer profitable to renovate the pump, thus the pump association decided to invest in a brand new pump.

The new pump is galvanized to be more rust-resistant and less vulnerable to scratches and scuffs when it is installed. It should likely be able to last 70 years, just like the old one.

The vast majority of pumps that are finished here at Lykkegaard are either sent out into the world - or we deliver them ourselves to assemble them. But just in this case, Hans Højvang and his friend came themselves and picked up the pump and installed it in the pump house in Odsherred.

Fast production of pumps to the Faroe Islands

We have produced two pumps for a fish farm at the Faroe Islands in two weeks. Thanks to our large warehouse we had all components in stock

Sometimes it has to go fast.
As example - when our Faroese customer urgently needed pumps for their fishing plant

They need five - but the first two were absolutely urgent. Fortunately, we had pretty much all the components in stock for just the size pump they need. In a week and a half they are designed, approved, produced and tested so they can be sent up north to the Faeroe Islands.

Some laugh a little at the fact that we have a large warehouse and always plan to have propellers and pump housings in stock in various sizes. But it means that we can make a difference for customers who are facing urgent challenges, and we can start producing without having to factor in long shipping times for components.

We can provide high service and still ensure that everything is produced locally. It makes good sense to us.

Customers are more energy-concious

Customers have become more energy conscious: They choose Lykkegaard's pumps because of their low energy consumption.

In recent years, several customers have chosen Lykkegaard's pumps because they document a significantly lower consumption than similar pumps. And the inquiries on that question are increasing. Lykkegaard's engineers are constantly working to optimize energy consumption even more.

Several customers return to Lykkegaard A/S because their electricity bills have become significantly lower after they have bought one or several pumps from Lykkegaard. In these months, more than ever, we experience our customers' concern for the energy consumption is larger than ever due to the global energy crisis. It is however, not the only reason why the awarenes of energy consumption is rising. We experience a growing interest for sustainability and general consciousness on consumption.

More orders have come in from customers who buy a single or a few pumps to test whether it can be true that they use significantly less power in relation to the performance, than their previous pumps. Now they are returning to replace all their pumps and with that mission save huge sums on the electricity bill.

A French fish farm has bought 12 pumps on that account over the past year and a half. They first bought one pump in the spring of 2021. Then five more, which were delivered last summer. And now we have just sent the last six away, so they have received a total of 12 pumps.

"We find that customers are significantly more demanding for higher energy efficiency. And with good reason, because a lot is saved in the long term, especially with the rising energy prices we have nowadays," says Karsten Lykkegaard, who owns Lykkegaard Pumper A/S.

The pumps are optimized for the customer's needs

Lykkegaard specializes in producing pumps for draining low-lying areas and for the fishing industry. Many of the pumps work around the clock to either circulate and oxygenate water or to drain. Therefore, savings in energy consumption make a big difference on an annual basis.

At Lykkegaard A/S, each individual pump is designed and produced specifically for the customer's needs. In the calculations, it is designed to run at the best operating point – that is, where you use the least amount of energy to achieve the lifting height and performance that the customer needs.

All pumps from Lykkegaard are tested in Lykkegaard's own testing center before they are shipped to the customer. The customer receives a signed certificate that the pump meets the targets for water volume, lifting height and energy consumption.

Looking for details that can optimize energy even more

At Lykkegaard it has always been a goal to achieve energy-efficient pumps. Karsten Lykkegaard's grandfather developed pumps where the diameter of the pump pipe is increased at the outlet compared to the inlet, because it lowers the water speed and thus also the energy loss.

The pumps are still designed according to that technique – even though it is more complex to produce than if the pipes had had the same diameter.

In addition, the newest pumps are getting a new type of highly efficient propeller, which is milled rather than cast. The detailed accuracy means that the propeller uses less energy to move the same amount of water at the operating point.

"It is in our DNA to work with energy optimization and we have done it for generations. But with the increasing focus on climate, environment and especially the unruly energy prices we have nowadays, we find that more customers do not just see it as a positive, but a definite criterion, when choosing new pumps," says Karsten Lykkegaard, who also promises that the company continue to develop and optimize the pumps.

Everything is cleaned up every Friday

The air quality in the workshop improves when a general cleaning is done every Friday

Fridays are different from the other days at Lykkegaard. There we always get rolls for our morning coffee.

And after that break, the apprentices and the working assistent focus on cleaning for the rest of their day at the factory. .

Machines, floor, surfaces. Everything must be cleaned.

No, the apprentices don't exactly love it. But they get used to it and they also learn to understand that cleaning is a task just as important in the company as so much else. The great focus on cleaning every Friday means that we can turn up to a clean business on Monday morning. And it's lovely

But that's not the only reason why we make a virtue of getting everything properly and thoroughly cleaned. It is also about the working environment and the health of the employees.

They work with various metals and materials, which are processed, turned, ground and cut.

It generates dust and particles which fly around in the air, despite the fact that the machines have extraction and there is a focus on ventilation.

That is why we vacuum everything that is not the large shavings, so that we can reduce the amount of metal dust considerably.

So cleaning is part of the effort to keep a healthy working environment - and it also makes the whole factory look presentable.

The city of Aarhus prepared for heavy rainfalls

The people in the city of Aarhus can be safe in the event of heavy rainfall. Especially those in Aarhus North.

Lykkegaard A / S has recently completely renovated one of the two large pumps, which keep the area around Egå drained of water. It can pump 4000 liters of water per second, so it can really move huge masses of water, if there is a cloudburst or a period of particularly heavy rain in the area.

Lykkegaard A / S has recently re-installed one of the two drainage pumps, which direct rainwater away from the township of Egå and the rest of Aarhus North. Summer and heavy rains can now come without causing an overload of the pumps. Each pump can remove 4000 liters of water per second, if the amount of water in the area require it - though it is really rare that both pumps work at highest level at the same time.

This spring, one of the two very large pumps that drain Århus Nord, broke down and a thorough restoration was needed. Lykkegaard A / S has performed service on the pumps for more than 30 years, for this reason we were also chosen to fulfill the task of repairing the pump.

In addition to the broken axel which was the reason for the crash, the propeller blades had gradually become so worn, that they were too short and had to be extended. The guide vanes that lead the water to the propeller, were all in a bad condition - and most had rust holes.

The wooden counter flaps, which ensure the water does not run back, when the pumps are switched off, had rotted. So they were completely replaced and Lykkegaard has built new ones that fit the measurements of the particular pump house.

Reuse and repair support sustainability

Lykkegaard's philosophy is to repair and reuse as much of the existing material as possible, when we renovate and provide service. Sometimes building new woould be easier and more economic favorable to us as a company.

It is deffinitely easier to cut or grind too much, than to add extra lenght to propeller blade. So it has been a challenging task in the workshop to expand the diameter of the propeller by welding an extra piece on and then adjusting it to the angle and thickness of the part old part.

We succeeded apart from fact that we had build two brand new counter flaps instead of the rotten ones, and that we produced a new axel, all parts of the pump have been recycled and repaired, so the pump is now running as good as a new one.

“It is a fun task to work with because we are challenged on something we do not do every day. But there is also a great satisfaction in handing over a pump that runs optimally and where we have used the craftmanship to recycle so much material and repair it! ” says Karsten Lykkegaard, who owns Lykkegaard A / S.

6th grade calculates the volume of Lykkegaard's warehouse

The pupils in 6th grade at a local primary school have spent an entire school day at Lykkegaard A/S. They have learned about the company and what it is like to work at the factory - and furthermore they have measured and calculated the volume of the large warehouse and smaller boxex and cylinders used at Lykkegaard. The visit is the part of the koncept "Business Backpack", in which school students visit local companies to partly make the teaching more concrete and partly show them local job and educational opportunities.

"Before I came here, I thought I wanted to be an interpreter. But this also sounds exciting. Especially the fact that you have to work and program with a computer. I would like to get an internship here. ”

Nynne Hagen has visited Lykkegaard A / S with her 6th grade from the local school in Rolfsted. The 16 students and teachers Allan Meldgaard have spent a whole school day at the factory as part of the "Business Backpack", which is a collaboration between schools and companies in Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality. Here, students from 4th - 9th grade visit companies in the local area. They are shown around, hear about the company and get an impression of which working tasks are performed in this company.

What differs from a "classic" company visit is, that the students also work with their own tasks during the day. In this case, teacher Allan Melgaard, in collaboration with business owner Karsten Lykkegaard, has prepared some math problems about meassurements and volume, that the students solve while they are at the company.

Reality math is more fun

Among other things, the students have measured the height, length and width of the large warehouse so that they can calculate the volume of the building. In addition, they have also measured and calculated the area and volume of various boxes and cylinders.

This makes great sense to Nynne Hagen:

“The warehouse was cool. There were so many things in there in different sizes. I had no idea they would need so many different things in a warehouse. And it was fun to find the volume of the building - much more fun to go here and measure up and have to calculate something from reality instead of a task, "she says.

Cake, question and learning

Starting in the morning, the students were seated in one of the large halls with traditional pastry, "brunsviger" and soda. That serving is certainly not part of everyday life, Jonas Jensen from the class noted.

"It has been a really good visit. More exciting than sitting at home in class - and it was really nice that we got pastry and soda, "he says and completely agrees with Nynne Hagen that it is fun to measure with long measuring tapes in the large rooms.

The students' mathematics teacher Allan Meldgaard also appreciates the collaboration with the company:

“It is an exciting way to work. We all learn something. Here at Lykkegaard, we can measure and work with things that I can not give them in a classroom setting. To me it is exciting to see, how the students work and collaborate now that we are out of the classroom. Some are clearly best at solving a task on paper, while others benefit here where can feel things and work in a real life setting. I also see that some students get very tired of all the impressions. It is great to be out of the safe environment and I am sure that everyone has benefited a lot from being here today, ”he says.

Important for the professions and the future

Karsten Lykkegaard, who owns Lykkegaard A / S, has spent the whole day with the students, partly telling about the company, partly showing them how to use mathematics when working as an industrial technician. He does this, because he finds it an important social duty to invite children in and teach them how working life is "in reality".

“We all have a responsibility to educate children and young people. We will need skilled industrial technicians in the future, so it is necessary to plant a knowledge and interest in some of the students, so that they think of industrial technicians or other craft-profession when they'll choose their path. I believe that they can make a more qualified choice when we as companies invite them in, so they get an impression of what it is like to work as a craftsman, ”says Karsten Lykkegaard and concludes:

Eight HDPE Pumps ready for a fish farm in New Zealand

We have recently shipped 8 brand-new HDPE-pumps to a fish farm in New Zealand.

Before moving the pumps into the containers, we knew that the space was tight, and that we needed to be very careful and efficient to ensure that eight pumps and eight motors would fit.

We succeeded - but had to "un-box" a motor and repack it in order to be able to close the doors of the container.

The pumps are far too heavy to be able to be stacked on top of each other - that is why we have so much space "above" the pumps.

We look forward to hearing from the customer when the containers - hopefully - have arrived safely at their destination.

What is the exact energy consumption at a certain head and flow?

The data we provide our customers when recieving their brand new pumps, are gained from our own testing center.
The testing facility is build i order to create a natural and "real" environment, where the pumps can be tested and from where we can get the data.

This means that when we calculate a certain flow, head and energy consumption, the result is what the customer can actually expect the pump to deliver at the final setting.

Sustainability, recycling, and environmental care are core values in the fishing industry these days. And Danish Lykkegaard Pumps A/S aim to support the aqua culture industry developing new and more sustainable ways of producing consumer fish.

For the last 20 years, the Danish factory has been developing an innovative 100% corrosion-resistant pump solution for the fish farming industry. Sustainability has always been a core value in developing the pumps. But with the UN Sustainable Developmental Goals it has been even more stressed. Especially goal 12 about sustainable production .

The sustainability-value is identified in alle parts of the supply chain. The pumps are developed in the corrosion free material HDPE, which can work in salty and even warm water without any corrosion – as a contrast to steel pumps. The pumps are produced with the aim of lasting forever, and until now – all the HDPE pumps Lykkegaard has manufactured during the last two decades are still in use.

A sign of them meaning “forever” is, that they still support costumers with spare parts to some 70-year-old steel pumps produced at the factory shortly after World War II.

“It is a challenge for us, that when our costumers have bought our pumps, we don’t need to provide any pumps to them again – usually for the next, say 50 years, unless they expand, because of the high quality. But it is nevertheless our goal to produce pumps, that never degenerate. Fortunately, our values correspond very well with some of the developmental goals,” CEO Karsten Lykkegaard says.

Invitation to return the pumps for recycling

Lykkegaard Pumps A/S has designed the propeller pumps in as few parts as possible and in as few different materials as possible. For this reason, they can recycle 99 percent of the new HDPE pumps into materials, that can be recycled into new pumps.

The only part still not recyclable is the rubber from the water lubricated bearing.

As the employees at Lykkegaard know the material best, they invite their costumers to return the HDPE pumps for recycling, once they are no longer in use. The employees know exactly how to disassemble the pumps and separate the parts.

“We know how to reuse all the parts, and we have a routine in disassembling the pumps into clean and reusable material. We are delighted to do so as a part of our service to our customers – and to the environment. When we do it here, we know how the material is recycled,” says Karsten Lykkegaard, CEO at Lykkegaard A/S, and fourth generation at the family-driven factory.

Separate waste into 40 different fractions

For instance, the HDPE material is granulated and will be melted and used to produce new HDPE products, e.g., waste containers or new tubes.

According to the sustainability goals, Lykkegaard A/S has refined their ideas and behaviors according to reusability. Today the employees are separating their waste into more than 40 fractions.

“In this way we can reuse more material – and furthermore we can assure that it can be reused at a higher level of quality, as it will be cleaner products,” Karsten Lykkegaard says and continues: “We aim to minimize the amount of waste and to recycle as much as possible. With 99 percent recyclability of our pumps, we are proud to send them to our customers, knowing that we can provide longevity and even after 30 or 50 years the leftovers can be fully recycled.

In 1967 we - (@Karsten Lykkegaard's father and his crew) produced a drainage pump developed for a farm in Norway. Now, after 54 years it needs to be replaced.

We are of course happy to be chosen as the supplier - and benefit from our strict archive system, as we still have the details, drawings and measurements of the old pump. This made it much easier to design the new pump to fit into the same place.

Today we have packed and shipped a brand new pump to Norway - knowing that it will fit exactly into the place, where the old pump is today.

Five propeller pumps shipped to France

A French Aquaculture farm has just received five brand new propeller pumps for their fish tanks.

They ordered one propeller pump last year, and returned happy to us this summer ordering five more, so Lykkegaard pumps now cover the whole fish farm.

The pumps are same size and construction and the model LM Fresh, and pump 400 l/sec at 1,5 mvs motor. They are designed and dimensioned to the exact size and needs at the French fish farm.

Every pump is tested

At Lykkegaard we are very keen to ship the best quality pumps and want to assure, that every pump functions without any leaks or inconveniences. For this reason we have build our own testing area and test every pump, before we ship them to our customers.

Lykkegaard produces brand new propeller pump for Norwegian RAS facility in just two weeks from order to delivery

This is our fastest production of a customized pump till now.

The Norwegian RAS facility, Sævareid Fiskeanlegg was in trouble due to lack of rain in the late summer. The tanks are situated so the water naturally flows from the nearby lake through the tanks on its way to the near by river.

But due to lack of rain the level of water in the lake sank so much, that the water flew too slow into the tanks.

So the need of a new pump was urgent in order to secure the facility and the fresh water to the fish.

At Lykkegaard we have produced pumps for aquaculture for decades - and have already delivered several pumps to Sævareid Fiskeanlegg in Norway. But the need at this point was different - and more comparable to the challenges we meet when we produce pumps for drainage. But at this point we have produced pumps for drainage for more than a century - so of course we took the challenge and designed a pump that could meet their needs.

We started immediately - luckily we have most parts at our local warehouse, but we had to contact different motor-providers in order to get the motor fast enough.

But we managed to design, produce, manufacture, test and ship the pump to Norway as our fastet production ever.

Exactly two weeks after they placed the order, the pump rolled into the facility in Norway.

REPAIR & MAINTENANCE

Sometimes we receive some very old propeller pumps for repair at our Funen factory. This particular pump was produced and delivered to the customer in 1959. For the last 61 years, this drainage pump has been in operation in the Ringsted region – so we can safely emphasize the long life cycle of our products!

For generations, we have designed, produced and maintained pump solutions for our customers. The propeller pumps that we have supplied over the years are all registered in our database, and we are in regular contact with our customers to make sure they are still satisfied with their solutions. At our Funen factory, we receive propeller pumps for repair and service. Our in-house technicians take care of wear parts replacement and help prolonging the life cycle of the serviced propeller pumps.

Now and then, we see some very old propeller pumps coming in for repair. This pump has just been repaired at our factory – it was actually produced by the second generation of the company, and delivered to the customer in 1959. For the last 61 years, this drainage pump has been in operation in the Ringsted region – so we can safely emphasize the long life cycle of our products!

Owner of the Funen factory Lykkegaard A/S, Karsten Lykkegaard, receives the LO Southern Funen Initiative Award, in particular for his effort to find apprenticeships and internships for young people.

Karsten Lykkegaard, Managing Director of Lykkegaard A/S, was just granted the LO (the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions) Southern Funen Initiative Award. One convincing reason is Lykkegaard’s commitment to find apprenticeships and internships for young people.

Ferritslev: – I have not yet decided how to spend the money. I have the cheque at home – I just need to find a way to the bank to cash it.

62 year-old Karsten Lykkegaard starts laughing and points out that he hasn’t held a cheque in his hands for a long time. A real cheque.

– But it feels nice. It is always great when someone appreciates your work. The honour is what matters the most, he says.

For many years, being the company owner of Lykkegaard A/S in Ferritslev, he has focused on finding apprenticeships and internships for young people. His initiative is one of the reasons why he received the LO Southern Funen Initiative Award – an honour accompanied by a cheque for 5,000 Danish kroner.

– It is important that companies take responsibility to train our young people. Both the easy ones and the not so easy ones to handle. It is not okay to leave out a whole group – all young people should have the chance to get educated, Karsten Lykkegaard explains.

His great grandfather did the same

More than 25 years ago, he took over the family business, and they have always had many apprentices.

– And my father before me. Just for the fun of it I checked some old documents. And it turned out that my great grandfather hired our first apprentice in 1903. In fact, he (the apprentice, Editor’s note) won a prize for diligence; very cool indeed, Karsten Lykkegaard continues.

Today, the company goal is to have 40 per cent apprentices among the staff – also young people who need extra attention and support to complete their education.

– It sounds like I’m praising myself – but we are actually earning money from our apprentices. What is takes is to show the young people that we believe in them and to help them make their education plan. We do not just put a broom in their hands to sweep the floor or ask them to push a green button. We challenge them and give them responsibility, giving them the power to grow with the work, the 62 year-old CEO points out.

– Saying that young people today have long hair, nose piercings and don’t want to work is not true. The great majority wants to work and learn.

Selfish and short-sighted

It is not only in the business arena that 62 year-old Lykkegaard works to support young people. He is also a member of the Faaborg-Midtfyn Business Council, and according to LO part of a working group with focus on the establishment of apprenticeships and internships in the local companies.

– Everybody needs craftsmen. But some companies tell the young people only to come back when they are properly skilled. There is nothing more short-sighted or selfish than this approach, for it is our social responsibility to educate our young people, Karsten Lykkegaard underlines pointing out that in fact, they see a small rise in the number of apprenticeships and internships for young people.

But …

– I’m not afraid to say this – to say what I really mean. Companies like ours – owner-managed – feel a greater responsibility than large organisations with a foreign manager who does not have any connection to the local community. It is obvious to see that this is the way it is. It adds meaning when we meet the parents of the young people at the local bakery store or on the local football field.

Million profit company

With Karsten Lykkegaard leading the way, the Funen company has transformed from a traditional machine factory into an international company specialised in propeller pumps for large industries, land-based fish farms, power stations and drainage of vast areas.

Karsten Lykkegaard has turned the family company into an international company with customers in more than 50 countries.

The propeller pumps are exported to more than 50 countries across the world. And the series of million kroner profits continues in the 2019/2020 financial report soon to be published through the Danish Business Authority.

The financial report is by no means affected by the corona crisis.

– We felt some effect of the corona crisis after the summer holiday, but the closing of our accounts was on 30th June. And it will be one of the best results we have ever produced, Karsten Lykkegaard says with satisfaction.

In the last report, Lykkegaard A/S delivered a result before tax of three million Danish kroner.

LO Southern Funen just gave their Initiative Award to Karsten Lykkegaard, Managing Director of Lykkegaard A/S

The award was announced at the LO Southern Funen Meeting of Representatives and includes a cheque for 5,000 Danish kroner.

“Karsten Lykkegaard makes a special contribution to support young people, not just in his own company, but also in the local community as part of the Business Council and as a member of a working group going systemically for the establishment of apprenticeships and internships in companies in the municipality. They are working closely with the labour market partner LO, employee representatives and the municipality”, the announcement explains as part of the appointment.

Last year, it all summed up to 620 internships in the municipality, and the target is to set up an internship guarantee in the municipality for young people who want to take their education on the local labour market. Several apprenticeships have already been offered at Lykkegaard A/S.

“For many years, Karsten Lykkegaard has shown the way by accepting apprentices and securing them both an education and recruiting them for his company. In the company that he manages they have decided that 40% of the staff must be apprentices.”

Furthermore, Lykkegaard is praised for accepting young people with a need for extra attention, support and help to enable them to harvest personal victories that will bring them a good education.

The company was the winner of the Company of the Year Award in 2017 in the Faaborg-Midtfyn Business Council . It was precisely for taking a large social responsibility, but also for their commitment in the local Ferritslev community.

Karsten Lykkegaard explains:

“I have two reasons for taking apprentices again and again: It is manpower, and they are good helpers – and they add new ideas, young energy to the staff and help us secure our own recruitment pool. But I also do it because it is our social responsibility to secure education for young people. A local commitment that everyone should give.”

The company works with climate solutions and support sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions in their production and products. Another focus is well-being, job satisfaction and a good physical and mental working environment among their staff.

The company manufactures pump solutions. Propeller pumps for aquaculture, industry and drainage represented in projects across all continents and in more than 50 countries.

Right now, there is special focus on storm water discharge, drainage of open land and flooded areas and the climate challenges and climate proofing demands that we will all face in the future.

New generation of large corrosion-resistant HDPE pumps from Lykkegaard A/S soon on the market.

A new generation of large corrosion-resistant HDPE pumps for aggressive salt water will soon be ready for sale. One of these is our till date largest propeller pump with a performance of up to 1100 l/sec.

They are especially developed as high quality pumps for aquaculture, but as we design and dimension every pump, we can adapt the pumps to e.g. industry use. The HDPE-material is especially convenient when working in salty water.

The first prototype is being prepared in the production. Then we will run an internal test programme of the pump before sending it to the market.

We are very excited to see the test results, and we are looking forward to introducing the pump in the nearest future.

RAS – Recirculated Aquaculture System – is a closed high-tech land-based aquaculture unit that circulates, cleans and reuses the water to achieve the least possible volume of ground water used and to avoid spills and sea pollution.

A RAS system is a solution of the future, developed, used and exported by innovative Danish fish farms. Through this technology, they can breed fish on land in a closed system with complete production control and a minimum of nutrient release. POPULAR TEST CENTRE

At our factory test centre, we are quite busy. Our export of propeller pumps across the world is high. We are finalising propeller pump orders for Azerbaijan, Singapore and Norway right now, to name a few. All pumps are quality tested in our test basin before final delivery to the customer.

Test Centre

Running the propeller pumps through continuous tests is key to our development process. Since we produce pump solutions customised to each individual customer exclusively, we have established our own Test Centre to perform physical test running of our pumps. Our engineers and constructors test all pumps in collaboration with our technicians before they are sent to the customer.

The unit consists of a tank divided into two sections with separate installations for steel and HDPE pumps. An important unit element is the integrated advanced flow metering equipment we use to measure pump capacity and efficiency. The unit holds approx. 1 mill. litres of water in total.

Our Test Centre is also used for testing complementary pump solutions, and the facilities are made available to various public institutions and business partners, too.

Is sustainability a priority during a crisis? Read the full interview with Lykkegaard A/S by Maritime Cluster Funen – part of Business Development Centre Funen (ErhvervshusFyn) here:

Interview: For many years, pump manufacturer Lykkegaard A/S has focused on making their production and products environmentally friendly. Recently, Lykkegaard started incorporating the UN Sustainable Development Goals into their processes and strategy. The aim is to be a responsible company, using a minimum of the Planet’s resources and to secure decent work and economic growth. But how does the corona crisis influence on the pump manufacturer? And is it still meaningful to discuss sustainability in a time of crisis? We have asked Louise Lykkegaard, and these are her keen answers.

What impact does the corona crisis have on your company? And to what extent?

– Basically, the corona crisis has not affected our company. On the contrary. For the last couple of months, we have seen a rise in our order flow. We do not know the reason for this development – but one theory could be that businesses have found time and peace to make important decisions and future plans. We have received an order for propeller pumps to a new, large land-based fish farm in Singapore, among others. Production at our Ferritslev site has not been affected by the corona crisis, apart from a few physical changes in our staff canteen.

Your company is focusing a lot on sustainability. What changes have you experienced during the crisis?

– During this crisis, we have been reassured that having local suppliers is very meaningful. Consequently, we have not been suffering from any lack of supplies or problems with securing materials for our own production. So we feel confident that our consistent strategy is right for us – also looking into the future.

– Furthermore, we are trying to support those in need, including local retailing. To support the local bakery, for instance, we have bought breakfast for our staff almost every day during the crisis.

Is it still meaningful to discuss sustainability in a time of crisis?

– Yes! As a manufacturer of long-lasting and energy-saving propeller pumps we play a small role on the big, worldwide scene to create a sustainable future. As a company, we want to lead the way through caring, decency and a consistent strategy to obtain a greener and more sustainable future.

When we can put the corona crisis behind us, the world will still be facing important challenges. Our high-performance propeller pumps are designed to circulate large volumes of water. And this is exactly what the world needs in order to overcome some of our future challenges, because:

– Climatic changes require drainage of vast areas, climate-proof cities and rural land in Denmark as well as abroad.

– The production of food and consumer goods generates large volumes of effluent that needs to be cleaned before discharged – to protect our lakes, rivers and oceans from pollution.

– Plastic and other pollution are floating around in the ocean affecting the natural fish population. Therefore, it would be advisable to set up production of fish and other foods in land-based tanks, thereby controlling the cleaning process of waste and sewage of the surrounding landscape.

We intend to continue our investment in a more sustainable production and products with a long operating life, thus contributing to the improvement of the worldwide changes we are all facing.

CORROSION- RESISTANT PUMPS

Corrosion-resistant Lykkegaard propeller pumps for Canadian Aquaculture

Lykkegaard will supply 16 large corrosion resistant PE propeller pumps to Canada, where they will be part of an advanced fish farming facility. The pumps must work in salt water, which is why the highest priority for the customer is that the pumps can work in aggressive environments without corroding.

The first eight pumps are ready to be shipped to the Canadian island of Newfoundland. And in the new year, eight more pumps are on the way.

The pumps are made of HDPE (high density polyethylene) and are of the type LM Salt 400/500 – PE. The pumps have a output of 395 l / sec. v. 3.5 M / Vs.

Our innovative corrosion resistant pump solution, is developed for the fish farming industry in particular, where the pumps are usually working under challenging conditions in aggressive water with high temperatures and salinity.

With our PE-pump made of the extremely durable, reusable and low-noise material HDPE – fish farmers can get a guaranteed 100% corrosion-resistant, stable pump solution and avoid unnecessary downtime.

The Lykkegaard PE-propeller pump can be mounted in water with a salinity of 500-40.000 ppm and water temperatures of up to 30 °C.

Lykkegaard A/S manufactures customised propeller pumps, supplying our customers with optimal performance and the most energy-efficient, cost-efficient and reliable pump solutions. Lykkegaard propeller pumps are axial pumps, used when there is a need for high-performance circulation of large volumes of water, at low pressure and relatively low head. Output: from 15 l/sec. to over 4.000-5.000 l/sec. – representing a volume of 18.000 m3/h or more. The propeller pumps are with dry installed IEC standard Motors and water-lubricated rubber bearings so no electric motor parts are under water, which are easier to service and reducing the risk of giving off heat or pollution to the water. THE UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Co-operation on sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals: For many years, Lykkegaard A/S has invested in environmentally friendly production and products, but needed a partner to help them describe their achievements and to set new goals. Supporting their efforts to work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Amilkon – already assisting in phasing out dangerous chemicals and securing their machinery – continues to be their close partner.

Pump manufacturer Lykkegaard A/S is one of the companies that make use of Amilkon’s guidance on working environment, sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. For 12 years, the founder of Amilkon, mechanical engineer Søren Jensen, has been their regular consultant and external safety manager. Even though Amilkon has only existed for 2½ years, Søren’s experience in consultancy and working environment goes back 18 years. Likewise, Else Marie Kristiansen from Amilkon has assisted Lykkegaard in connection with their chemical working environment. Else Marie is a skilled chemical engineer and climate coordinator working with climate action plans and CO2 accounts.

Karsten Lykkegaard, Managing Director and fourth generation in the family business, has been working for many years to make their production and products environmentally friendly, but needed a partner to describe the achievements and to set new goals. Therefore, he contacted Amilkon, and this was the beginning of a fruitful co-operation to incorporate the UN Sustainable Development Goals in work flows and strategy.

THE UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS ON RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION

– Together with Louise I have concluded that Lykkegaard should start by focusing on Global Goal #12: Responsible Consumption and Production – and Global Goal #8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, because, in-house, they will be able to make an important difference there. – At the same time, their energy-saving and long-lasting propeller pumps are making a positive impact in the rest of the world, protecting cities and rural areas against flooding due to climate changes, Else Marie Kristiansen explains and continues: – I have described how they are already working with energy-saving measures and waste separation, for instance. Right now, we are investigating the possibilities of renewable energy and setting specific goals. Then their progress will be measured and documented. This is a very exciting project, and I am convinced that a lot of other companies will follow and take responsibility to work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals for a sustainable future.

Working environment is, however, still the core business of the young company Amilkon, who has been authorized by the Danish Working Environment Authority (Arbejdstilsynet) to undertake jobs in all five areas (physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic and psychosocial).

Businesses contact Amilkon for various reasons – because they are facing an inspection from the Danish Working Environment Authority and need to take care of their APV (workplace assessment), they are preparing for a new factory hall and need CE marking of their machines. Growing interest in long-lasting solutions

One of the Danish suppliers exhibiting at Aqua Nor 2019 is Lykkegaard A/S, a Danish pump technology specialist, consultant and supplier to both sea- and land-based fish installations across the world. Lykkegaard agrees that there is an increasing interest and demand from the market that is looking for suppliers to support a more sustainable production.

“The industry has intensified its focus on the environment, and we are experiencing a growing interest in solutions that are stable and long-lasting. New corrosion-resistant pump

To meet the demands, Lykkegaard is launching the world’s first high-performing corrosion-resistant pump for aggressive saltwater that offers fish-farmers a solution that will last for many years:

“Due to challenging conditions in aggressive water with high temperatures and salinity, fish-farmers risk that pumps corrode very quickly. This causes unnecessary downtime and fish death because the water is not being oxidized and cleaned. With our new pump made of the extremely durable material HDPE, fish farmers can get a guaranteed 100 percent corrosion-resistant solution and avoid fish death,” says Karsten Lykkegaard and continues:

“Moreover, the pumps will last for many years ahead and are easy to service because no electrical motor parts are under water. Propeller pumps are axial pumps, that meet the need for high-performance circulation of large volumes of water at low pressure. This ensures fish farmers documented low energy consumption and a cost-efficient solution.”

Recent major and global climate changes are leading to increasing temperatures, precipitation, higher water levels in the oceans and increased high tide levels in connection with storms and floods. Lykkegaard A/S recently developed and introduced our new high-performing PE propeller pump with an output of 800l/s– documented to be the best-performing pump in the market for aggressive water.

For the last 20 years, we have been developing an innovative 100% corrosion-resistant pump solution for the fish farming industry in particular, where the pumps are usually working under challenging conditions in aggressive water with high temperatures and salinity. The pump is made of the extremely durable material HDPE (high-density polyethylene) which is not only guaranteed to be corrosion-free, but also a very light and low-noise material. DRAINAGE OF OPEN LAND

Many towns and municipalities which are located close to water and wetlands need large and reliable pumping systems that are able to handle enormous quantities of water. Other towns are located in flat land areas where the natural outflow of water is slow and difficult.

Owing to the more and more frequent cloudbursts, many large open or closed rainwater basins are established these days. In particular in towns, this is often a challenge, however, because areas for basins are not available.

During a cloudburst that hit Copenhagen in July 2011, on average 100 mm of water fell in an area of 200 square kilometres in the capital city. This is 20 billion litres of water, corresponding to the quantity of water in 8,000 swimming pools of Olympic dimensions and of a depth of two metres.

In the nature of things, heavy cloudburst will occur but the example emphasises the importance of including climate adaptation and action plans in the municipal future budgets and several of the municipalities in Denmark located in areas near the coast have therefore also started to invest in new high water solutions consisting of dike and pumping systems that can together lead the water around the built-up areas.

In Denmark alone, Lykkegaard propeller pumps have been installed in more than 2,000 installations and are an important part in the prevention of floods. The combination with a specially designed propeller installed in a pump housing dimensioned on the basis of the maximum requirements of the plant secures a very high pumping effect, which is decisive in critical situations.

CHALLENGES IN THE CASE OF HEAVY CLOUDBURSTS

These days, the climate changes create new challenges and at several places investments are made in new dike and pumping systems so that the water can be led around built-up areas. As will be known, water respects neither municipal nor national borders and when heavy rain is falling, reliable pump solutions are required that can quickly and efficiently drain off the large quantities of water to the surrounding rainwater basins.

Flooded roads, filled-up drains, production shutdowns and water in the basement. We get more water from above and from the sea than we have been used to. This results in costs amounting to billions of kroner to an extent that society cannot afford. The increased quantities of water are not only something that is to be drained off in drainage systems or hidden behind a dike.

When the climate changes have the effect that thousand year floods happen every third year, the protection of buildings and areas against the consequences is urgent. Many towns and municipalities which are located close to water and wetlands therefore need large and reliable pumping systems that are able to handle enormous quantities of water.

Danish dwellings, offices and industrial properties resist the extreme weather considerably worse than do properties in countries such as Holland and France and the primary reason for this is that the Danish building standards and protection methods do not reflect the weather conditions that have become reality with the climate changes.

Basically, the fact is that building standards and protection measures are not to describe solutions on the basis of how the weather has been but how it will be in future and there is no shortage of warnings that action should be taken now. Investments are to be made in more sustainable solutions and this is both in relation to coast protection, climate adaptation and flood protection.

Two important parameters to consider before selecting pump solutions:

The pumps must be able to dispose of large inflows of water in a very short time and reliability which is a decisive competitive parameter.
